The Renault Club of Queensland was formed when it was decided that being part of the Renault Club of Australia (based in Sydney) was logistically too difficult. This was in the days when the only means of communication for approvals for activities was the postal service.

Therefore in 1970 The Renault Club of Queensland Inc. was established to provide for the social and sporting needs of Renault enthusiasts in Queensland.

Renaults were selling well and earned the reputation for innovative, practical, economical, reliable and most importantly responsive and rewarding vehicles which were fun to drive.

Membership grew rapidly and the club was soon involved in running high visibility events such as the Renault Rallye Sportive (a round of the Queensland rally championship).

The RCCQ has always been a very active club which certainly raised the profile of Renault cars in the community and quite a few of the members from the early days have been continually involved in the club. Some members have returned as they decide in later years to restore Renaults which delighted them in their youth.

Legendary Renaults of the era include:

  • The Renault 16/16TS, which was the first true hatchback with astounding performance, comfort, space and durability;

  • The Renault 12 which provided many of the attributes of the R16 at a lower price;

  • The R8, R10 and R8 Gordini – cars which re-defined responsiveness, performance and comfort in a low price car. The R8 Gordini won the Australian Rally championship in 1970 against the far more powerful Holden Toranas and the much vaunted Mini Cooper S; and

  • The R4 which provided a large carrying capacity and great comfort in a small economical package and which was surprisingly pleasant to drive.

Badge used during the 1980's.

The enthusiasm for the Renault marque was created by owners because of the unique, affordable and very drivable cars.

Today the RCCQ has maintained its profile as a club of enthusiastic and friendly Renault owners. Renault has come back strongly into the market place with a very impressive range of cars and commercial vehicles. The range includes the new ‘hero cars’ with the same status as the mighty R8 Gordini - the Renault Sport range of Clio Sport 182 and Megane Sport 225.

Members of the club drive Renault vehicles including the Clio Sport, Fuego Turbo, Laguna, Scenic, Clio, Megane, 4CV, Dauphine, Floride, R4, R10, R25, R8, R8 Gordinis plus an increasing number of rare and desirable Renault Alpines.
